The Other Guys (Movie)

The cop comedy took a beating earlier this year when Kevin Smith's Cop Out emerged not just as the most unfunny movie of his career, but also his biggest hit. Adam McKay's The Other Guys isn't quite brilliant enough to make up for it, and doesn't come close to the sublime weirdness of his previous film Step Brothers, but it is a much funnier attempt to inject comedy into the familiar cop procedural, and yet another chance for audiences to stumble in on his long collaboration with Will Ferrell and marvel at what they come up with.

Eat Pray Love (Movie)

Eat Pray Love was more than just one woman's story from the very beginning-- writer Elizabeth Gilbert funded her year-long trip around the world with a publisher's advance, and experienced her stays in Italy, India and Indonesia with the knowledge that they would go into a book, and hopefully a successful one. The resulting bestseller phenomenon is something no one could have anticipated, but now that we have Eat Pray Love the movie, it's clearer than ever that Liz Gilbert, as played by Julia Roberts, is more avatar for all women than an actual human being. We watch her and her blond highlights and her tasteful clothes travel the globe because we cannot do the same, and whatever story might come along with it needs only to not get in the way of all the wish-fulfillment going on in the theater.

Glee Season 2 Episode 5 "The Rocky Horror"

Last night, “Glee” returned from its short break (okay, one week, but it felt like a long time) not just with a new episode, but with the show’s highly anticipated take on cult horror classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Last night’s episode has a lot of hype and expectations to live up to and only partly succeeded. After the sweet and simple “Duets” episode, this special tribute definitely shook things up, but was it a little overkill?

Mr. Schue encourages the glee club to perform “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” for the school’s fall musical, in yet another attempt to win back Ms. Pillsbury, who is a fan of the racy film. Smelling a scandal, a cable news outlet taps Sue to report on the production, as “Rocky Horror” is not exactly a Disney film.

Glee Season 2 Episode 2 "Britney/Britanny"

When the New Directions kids decide to devote the week to Britney Spears, the nature of Ms. Spears’ music (and public persona) are up for debate. Encouraged by a Facebook campaign for glee club to perform a Spears number at Homecoming, the kids fight an uphill battle to convince Mr. Schuester to agree. However, he tries instead to push less controversial performers Michael Bolton and Christopher Cross (Tina: “Don’t know who he is, don’t care”) instead. Sue, naturally, won’t stand for a “Britney Spears sex riot” at McKinley High. We also meet Ms. Pillsbury’s new boyfriend, the very attractive dentist Dr. Carl Howell (Stamos), who gives glee club a dental hygiene seminar. When a few of the young singers go in for their check-ups, they experience anesthesia-induced fantasies in which they perform some of Britney Spears’ greatest hits.

The second season premiere, “Audition,” makes it abundantly clear early on that despite how far the glee club has come, its members are still struggling to find their footing in the high school social hierarchy. As Kurt (Hummel) points out, though the glee kids may have accepted themselves for who they are, the rest of the school has not. In order to try and garner interest in and support for the club from the rest of the student body, New Directions tries to make themselves appear “cool” by performing songs straight off the Top 40 Hits list.

"Telephone" is a song by American recording artist Lady Gaga from her second studio album The Fame Monster, featuring American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles. Gaga originally wrote "Telephone" for Britney Spears; however, plans did not go through, and Gaga recorded the song herself, with Beyoncé as the featured vocalist. The main inspiration behind the song was Gaga's fear of suffocation. The lyrics portray the singer as preferring the dance floor, rather than answer her lover's phone calls. Gaga explained that the telephone addressed in the lyrics of the song, is in reality a person telling her to continue working harder. Musically, the song consists of an expanded bridge, verse-rap and an epilogue where the line is disconnected. Knowles appears in the middle of the song, singing the verses in a rapid-fire way, accompanied by double beats.
